Designing in 3D: York University TTC Station
The Spadina Subway extension represents Toronto’s first endeavour to connect a suburb to the city proper. Not only will it lead directly into SmartCentre’s new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – the heart of the up-and-coming vibrant downtown of Vaughan – but it’s also a thoroughfare for York University’s 53,000 students.
Balancing the needs of functional mobility with the desire to elevate passenger experience is no small thing. As a project, York University Station combined our expertise with our drive to employ new technology.
As projects go, this one was gold for a building contractor. Designing in 3D, collaboration with manufacturers and trade partners, state-of-the-art materials, environmental goals, a high public and political profile, not mention high demand.
As we move our business toward the future, we embraced the fact that this project could not have been designed without 3D technology. With our commitment to evolving our industry, we were eager to demonstrate the role a roof plays in environmental accountability and building energy efficiency. The metal roof is a “cool” roof; it has high solar reflectance and absorbs little heat.
Then there are the aesthetics.
How could we not be proud of a roof that quite literally shines as the focal point for the building itself? Gliding over the upper concourse and entrances in the Commons, the roof can be seen by drivers along Highway 407 and has quickly become a landmark. So much so that it was voted by UrbanToronto as the best new subway stations in Toronto.
